Chapter 5: The Insoluble Rules of Death
“I…I…”
Jiang Yu stammered for a long time but couldn’t utter a single word.
When faced with overwhelming fear, people often react this way.
The eerie mother’s cold eyes gradually curved into a slight smile.
Dinner was about to begin again.
“Smack!”
A sharp sound echoed through the hallway.
Jiang Yu covered her face, her eyes wide with shock and confusion as she looked at Xia Tianqiong.
The eerie mother was equally surprised.
It turned out Xia Tianqiong had suddenly slapped Jiang Yu hard, leaving a vivid red palm mark on her fair cheek.
“Speak up!”
Xia Tianqiong was frustrated, almost wanting to slap her again.
“Oh, oh…”
Jiang Yu finally snapped out of it. Though her speech was stammering, she managed to say in full sentences, “I…I promise to help you…find the child.”
The opportunity slipped away, and the eerie mother felt a trace of disappointment.
She then turned to Xia Tianqiong. “My child is lost. Can you help me find him?”
“I’m willing to help.”
Xia Tianqiong answered promptly, scrutinizing the eerie mother at the same time.
She was dressed in a white waist-length ancient-style skirt, her hair styled in a classical fashion, appearing as if she came from another era.
Despite her terrifying gaze, she was quite pretty.
This building only had seven floors in total. After Xia Tianqiong agreed, everyone in the unit was questioned once.
Having fulfilled the first rule, the eerie mother suddenly vanished from sight.
“Is she gone?” Jiang Yu asked tremblingly.
“For now. She’ll be back soon.”
Xia Tianqiong sighed; he didn’t know how to survive the crisis ahead.
“She’ll come back?”
From downstairs came the startled cries of several people.
It turned out that the surviving residents had come up, quite a few of them, all wanting to ask the person who had warned them what was going on.
A burly man stepped before Xia Tianqiong. “Brother, how do you know about the female ghost?”
Xia Tianqiong hesitated briefly, then fabricated a story, “I once saw a ghost story online about a female ghost who asks people to help find her child. If you refuse, she kills you. If you agree but fail to find the child, you still die.”
He wasn’t afraid to reveal some information—after all, everyone here might die, including himself.
If they could unite to search for the eerie infant, there might still be a chance.
“Is that true? Ghost stories can’t be real.”
A middle-aged woman in pajamas expressed disbelief.
Someone nearby immediately rebutted, “It’s gotten to this point. Better safe than sorry. If that ghost really comes back asking for her child, what then?”
“The ghost’s child must be a ghost too, right?”
“The crying just now was unnatural; maybe it’s hiding somewhere in this building.”
This unit had seven floors, with two households per floor, totaling about thirty residents.
Eight or nine had died following the eerie mother’s first rule, leaving just over twenty survivors. Now they all crowded around the stairwell between the sixth and seventh floors, arguing.
“Ghost orI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
