Chapter 12: The Murderer
Chapter 12: The Killer
Five minutes later, Charles and the others, alerted by the gunshots, finally arrived, their footsteps dragging with reluctance.
“They’re dead. All of them.”
Dark clouds gathered over their faces.
Charles remained expressionless. He hadn’t expected that less than fifteen minutes after splitting up, three more would be dead—so quickly they hadn’t even had a chance to use their communicators.
One teammate had an arrow piercing his throat, another was impaled with a wooden spear, and the third’s throat was slashed open.
Two had fallen victim to traps, and one appeared to have been mauled by a canine-like predator.
Judging by the manner of death, the assailant must have kept a hunting dog and had set traps well in advance of their arrival in this forest.
It was highly likely that many more such traps were scattered around.
A chilling thought crept into Charles’s mind.
Perhaps it wasn’t that the killer targeted their team specifically, but that they had unwittingly stepped into the killer’s hunting ground—and had become the prey.
Charles had been a poacher for over a decade, traveling across the globe. He had crossed paths with all kinds of people—from beggars and thugs to wealthy merchants and political figures.
Among them, he had witnessed the darkest facets of humanity: murderers who killed for sport—the killers.
These murderers chose their victims in various ways—some spontaneously, some methodically. The most terrifying were those who turned a whole region into a hunting ground.
They transformed an area into their personal killing field, regarding every human who entered as prey to be hunted and tortured without discrimination.
Clearly, Charles and his team had encountered such a monster.
Against such a killer, no matter how well equipped they were, no matter how precise their marksmanship or clever their tactics, all were futile.
This realization filled Charles with both rage and an icy dread rising from his feet to his heart.
“We can’t stay in this forest. We have to get out.”
Charles made up his mind.
Who knew how many traps were still set nearby? It was night now; many lives could be lost.
Just as he prepared to voice his suspicions, he noticed the numbers didn’t add up.
Besides himself, there were only five others around.
Two were missing.
“Kidd, Rubio, and Brownback—where are they?”
Charles looked toward Kidd, who was walking at the rear.
Among these five, one was on his team, three others formed another group, and Kidd was with Rubio and Brownback—who were nowhere to be seen here.
Hearing Charles’s question, Kidd’s face twisted in confusion.
“They were right behind me…”
But as he spoke, he glanced back and saw no one.
He froze.
Charles’s voice cut coldly through the tension.
“Where are they?”
Shaking his head, Kidd seemed to refuse to believe it.
“That’s impossible. We heard the shots and came running together. Rubio even spoke to me along the way.”
Charles didn’t press further. Kidd was on good terms with Rubio and Brownback; he wouldn’t have harmed them.I'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
