Volume One: Our Own League 131: The Sprinter Who Stunned Everyone
Never mind that for now; the school team tryouts have already begun.
On the other side, the 100-meter dash tests were underway. Clearly, the students were taking this very seriously, putting in every ounce of effort as if their lives depended on it. Xu He stood to the side, quietly observing them to see how they performed.
For seventh-grade students, the assessment usually focused more on the 50-meter dash, but the 100-meter was also included. A perfect score was generally anything under 14 seconds; anything in the 13-second range was considered excellent, while 15 seconds was the passing mark.
Looking at the current assessments, these students were doing reasonably well, and most were above the passing threshold. However, Xu He didn’t see anyone particularly fast—perhaps because his own speed was on another level.
Each group in the 100-meter test had three rounds, with the best result taken. Consequently, the testing pace wasn’t exactly fast. Xu He was growing impatient; he wanted to go out there and shock everyone immediately.
Naturally, Xu He’s attention was more focused on the ninth-grade seniors. Since there were fewer of them, their testing proceeded very quickly, and he wanted to see how many non-ball-related assessment items they had.
However, Xu He soon noticed a difference. The seniors’ assessment seemed much stricter than theirs. For the 100-meter dash, for instance, a seventh-grader only ran three rounds, while the seniors had to run six, with the best time being recorded. As a result, the average testing speed ended up being about the same.
Waiting and waiting, it was finally Xu He’s turn.
By this time, Xu He had heard some news: the person currently in first place among the earlier tests was Lin Xuefeng from the Class 10 football team. His three times were 13.11, 13.08, and 13.00 seconds exactly. Lin Xuefeng was the first to break into the 13-second range, securing a perfect score.
Xu He couldn’t help but praise, "As expected of Lin Xuefeng! Impressive!"
No wonder the girls in the stands were so excited; it turned out their idol, Lin Xuefeng, had taken first place. That explained why they kept chanting his name.
Seeing Lin Xuefeng’s score, Xu He felt brimming with confidence. In their team, he was even faster than Lin Xuefeng. It seemed that among the seventh graders at Jinguancheng No. 17 High School, he, Xu He, was the fastest.
Xu He followed Li Jie and the others to the 100-meter sprint area, waiting for the test to begin. Looking at the track, he rubbed his hands together, unable to wait any longer.
"Today, I’m going to really shock all of you. I’ll show you what a true 100-meter sprinter looks like!"
The chief examiner, Xu Dongsheng, reminded them, "Be sure to prioritize safety while running. Check your gear now—make sure your shoelaces are tied properly..."
Hearing these words, Xu He felt a sense of warmth. It was clear this coach was much kinder than Yangtong Mingxiong. Xu He immediately leaned down to check his gear and shoelaces, ensuring he was fully prepared.
Seeing that the students were ready, Xu Dongsheng said, "Alright, starting from the first person on the left, go to your respective lanes and get ready!"
The track at Jinguancheng No. 17 High School had eight lanes, so eight people were tested at once. Only five students from Class 11, including Xu He, had signed up, so three students from Class 12 joined them. Since the Class 10 students had finished their tests, it was only natural for the Class 12 students to fill the gaps.
Xu He stood in the fourth lane, shaking out his wrists and ankles to warm up thoroughly. At that moment, a crisp, oriole-like female voice rang out from the stands: "Xu He, go for it!"
Without turning his head, Xu He knew it was Li Liying. He immediately waved at her to let her know she could rest easy; he was confident about this sprint.
Suddenly, Lin Xuefeng also shouted, "Xu He, you’d better give it your all! Let me see how far behind I am compared to you!"
The crowd suddenly gasped. What was Lin Xuefeng saying? This guy named Xu He was faster than him?
"That’s impossible!"
"Lin Xuefeng has already broken 13 seconds; how could anyone be faster than him? No way!"
Needless to say, this caught not only the attention of the other students but also that of the PE teachers conducting the test and Coach Xu Dongsheng. Xu Dongsheng had a deep impression of Lin Xuefeng, the fastest seventh-grader so far. He hadn't expected Lin Xuefeng to claim someone was faster than him, which piqued his interest. Xu Dongsheng couldn't help but glance at Xu He in the fourth lane a few extra times. He was full of curiosity: was this guy really as fast as Lin Xuefeng said?
Xu Dongsheng, responsible for recording the scores rather than direct testing, signaled to his assistants that the assessment could begin. The PE teachers in charge nodded to indicate they were ready.
Because of Lin Xuefeng’s remark, the eyes of the entire field were focused on Xu He. In an instant, he became the center of attention. Most people would have felt immense pressure, but not Xu He. At this moment, all he felt was excitement.
*Today, I will shock everyone. I’ll show you what a real sprinter is.*
Xu He could feel the blood surging and boiling in his body. He suddenly felt himself heating up, his entire being filled with immense energy. This was his peak state. He felt even more confident.
"Come on, 100-meter test."
The PE teacher at the starting line looked at the group and asked, "Are you all ready?"
Xu He and the others nodded. The teacher raised his right hand, pointed the starting pistol at the sky, and shouted, "On your marks, get set—"
Xu He immediately assumed his starting stance, focusing his entire being on listening for the sound of the gun. At this moment, there were no extraneous thoughts in his mind; he was fully immersed, with every bit of his attention placed on hearing the shot.
Xu Dongsheng stared fixedly at Xu He, full of expectation. He wanted to see just how fast this kid could run.
"Go!" the teacher shouted, firing the pistol simultaneously.
The moment he heard the sound, Xu He shot forward like a cheetah spotting its prey. He opened up his powerful stride, racing forward as if riding the wind.
Fast—fast as a bolt of lightning!
Xu Dongsheng, who had been sitting, jumped up as if his chair were on fire. He stared at the lightning-fast figure in shock, his face filled with disbelief. Even the teacher who had fired the gun stood dumbfounded, completely stunned.
Xu He’s reaction time was incredibly fast; his start was significantly quicker than the others. As soon as he surged out, he was already a body length or two ahead.
"This is insane! How is he so fast?"
What shocked them even more was that Xu He kept getting faster as he ran. His legs blurred like spinning wheels, and he surged forward like a bullet exiting a chamber, seemingly tearing through the air—his figure was almost a blur.
The entire crowd gasped. *This is way too fast!*
Xu He didn't know how fast he was going; he only knew he had to go faster. He had to hit his maximum speed. He pumped his arms and kicked his legs with all his might. With every breath, his speed increased even further.
Xu Dongsheng’s mouth hung open, wide enough to fit a duck egg. He had seen fast people before, but never anyone like Xu He. You have to realize, this kid had just started seventh grade; he was only thirteen, his body hadn't even fully developed yet. If he could run this fast now, what would he be like once he hit his growth spurt?
The PE teacher helping record the times beside Xu Dongsheng exclaimed, "This kid shouldn't be playing football! He should be training for short-distance running. He should specialize in the 100-meter dash. He might just be the cornerstone of China’s 100-meter sprint resurgence, the future fastest man in Asia!"
The teacher truly felt it was a waste for Xu He to play football; he should be in track and field.
Most importantly, Xu Dongsheng actually agreed. He also felt that track and field would be more suitable for Xu He. To run this fast without professional training meant that if he received proper coaching, his potential for improvement would be immense.
He was a natural-born sprinter.
Xu He flew down the track, leaving the other competitors far behind. Now, his only opponent was himself. Even with such a massive lead, he didn't slack off; he kept sprinting with everything he had toward the finish line.
The students on the sidelines stared with wide eyes, as if they were looking at a monster. "Is this guy even human? Can a human run this fast?"
Li Liying was incredibly excited in the stands, jumping up and down and shouting Xu He’s name. Xu He was simply amazing—his speed left everyone else in the dust.
Seeing the finish line ahead, Xu He gritted his teeth and surged again, rushing past like the wind.
*Whoosh.* Xu He crossed the finish line as if he had torn through the air, and he didn't start slowing down until he had run quite a distance past it.
Everyone present stared at Xu He in shock. They were terrified by his speed. He had finished seconds ahead of everyone else!
Yang Hao, captain of the Class 6 football team, gaped in astonishment. After a long while, he shook his head and muttered, "Holy crap, that’s terrifying. That speed is absolutely terrifying!"
Even someone as proud as Yang Hao had to marvel and bow to Xu He’s speed. That alone told you just how fast he really was.
Lin Xuefeng was also dumbstruck. He knew Xu He was fast, but he hadn't expected him to be *this* fast. He turned to Zhu Ge and exclaimed, "He didn't break 13 seconds, did he?"
If that were true, Xu He was a complete freak of nature.
Hearing Lin Xuefeng, Zhu Ge was also stunned. You know, it was entirely possible that Xu He had broken the 13-second barrier.
Seeing Xu He cross the line, Xu Dongsheng excitedly shouted to the teacher timing him at the finish line, "What is it? What was his time?"
Xu Dongsheng didn't even realize his own voice was trembling. He was that excited.
The teacher looking at the stopwatch was stunned. He rubbed his eyes, unable to believe what he was seeing. Xu Dongsheng realized something was off, so he hurried over to the finish line. He took the stopwatch and looked at it, then froze, also rubbing his eyes in disbelief.
He looked up at the teacher and asked, "Did you time that accurately?"
The teacher had been extremely confident, but after seeing the time, he wavered. He wondered if he had pressed the button too early—otherwise, how could the time on the watch be so monstrous? Yet, he remembered clearly that he had been precise, perhaps even a bit late.
He struggled internally for a moment, then looked at Xu Dongsheng and said with absolute solemnity, "I timed it accurately. There is no mistake!"
Hearing this, Xu Dongsheng’s pupils contracted, and he gasped. He looked down at the stopwatch again. It read: 11.47 seconds!
*Holy crap, has a monster appeared at Jinguancheng No. 17 High School?*
This was truly the 100-meter sprinter of Jinguancheng No. 17 High School.
