Chapter 35: The Reincarnation of Huang Ying

I hurried after her. Everything she was doing now was dangerous.
She ran back to her room, and by the time I entered, white smoke was already rising from her hands in waves. I quickly felt inside my pockets, only to discover that the copper coins and the red slime were both gone.
Li Yun smiled at me, then opened her mouth and swallowed the small bottle of slime along with the string of copper coins.
“Don’t!” I shouted at her, but it was already too late.
The next moment, Li Yun’s entire body began to dissolve before my eyes.
I rushed forward, tore off the bedsheet, wrapped it around her, and carried her to the ice room as fast as I could.
I opened the freezer where Li Yun’s body was stored and placed her inside. Her spiritual power was already extremely weak. The moment I put her in, she merged with her corpse.
This would temporarily suppress the effects of the copper coins and the slime within her.
But if things remained this way, she would never be able to leave the freezer. The moment she did, her corpse would be destroyed, and the copper coins would begin exerting their influence again.
As I watched Li Yun lying quietly inside the freezer, a profound sense of guilt suddenly overwhelmed me.
If it had not been for me, she would probably still be living a good life.
Li Yun could survive only in this state, unless Grandfather had some way to help her.
After settling her in, I walked around the villa. She had lived alone in such a large house for more than a decade, and outside she had been forced to appear wanton and unrestrained. Only in this desolate place could she reveal the person she had truly been more than ten years ago. I did not know what kind of life that was, nor did I want to know.
I did not dare return to the rental apartment. Perhaps Huang Ying was still waiting for me, while I had slept with someone else here.
I had no idea what to do with the villa. When Li Yun had been there, even though she was a ghost, she had at least brought a little life to the place. Now, the last person in the house was sleeping inside a freezer.
Li Yun had been determined to die, but I had stopped her and forced her to cling to life in this manner. I did not know whether I had done the right thing.
Forget it. Right and wrong would be judged in time. For now, all I could do was continue according to my own will.
I found a string of keys in Li Yun’s room. They should have been the keys to the villa. I locked every door one after another, then finally locked the main entrance. Before leaving, I went back to the ice room for another look. They could stay only there; otherwise, they would immediately dissipate.
From then on, I would have to come here every day to check on them. Otherwise, I would never feel at ease.
As I walked along the road, the cold wind lashed my face. Only then did I finally realize how terribly wrong I had been.
If I had not gone out today, if I had pretended not to understand and acted as though I knew nothing, anything would have been better than this.
I had no idea how to face Huang Ying. I stood outside the door for a long time before finally knocking.
Huang Ying opened it, and the moment she saw me, a smile spread across her face.
Less than three seconds had passed between my knock and her opening the door. That meant she had been waiting for me at home. In the past, I would have been delighted, but now, seeing her smile, I felt utterly ashamed.
“I’m going to take a shower,” I said with my head lowered. Then I ran to the bedroom, grabbed some clothes, and went into the bathroom.

“Thank you!” I turned and said as I reached the bathroom door.
Huang Ying smiled faintly. “It’s nothing.”
Only after cold water splashed over my face did I regain some clarity. Today had been insane. I had no romantic feelings for Li Yun, yet at the time I could not find any reason to refuse her—and I could not bear to refuse her either.
After my shower, I did nothing else. I simply collapsed onto the bed and fell asleep. The things that had happened to me over the past two months had truly left me exhausted.
Life was a circle. Every time I thought I had reached the end, I would suddenly look back and find myself standing in the same place as before.
Each time I believed I had resolved one problem and that better days would follow, reality proved otherwise. What came next was always worse.
Just as I was drifting toward sleep, I sensed Huang Ying entering the room. She sat beside me and watched me.
I did not want to open my eyes then. I wanted to savor this warmth for a little longer. Perhaps before long, she too would leave me.
God played different jokes on different people every day. Li Yun was one of them. So was I. And so was Huang Ying.
Who could say that one day, on a sudden whim, He would not play an enormous joke on you as well?
I had thought that once I found the real murderer of the dorm leader, the matter would finally come to an end. Instead, I had brought an even greater disaster upon myself.
The only thing I could do was ignore everything, offer no explanations, and stop concerning myself with anything else. All I needed to do now was devote myself to treating Huang Ying well and make sure she did not become the next Li Yun.
The next morning, I woke up as promised. I still had classes to attend. When I left my room, I saw the food Huang Ying had prepared on the dining table.
As long as Huang Ying was home, all I had to do was eat, sleep, and play. She took care of everything else.
If I could live this way every day, what more could I possibly ask for in this life?
Whenever Huang Ying saw me, she smiled. But now, whenever I looked at her, I felt ashamed. I was completely unworthy of such kindness from her.
“Are you coming to school with me?” I did not even dare look her directly in the eye.
“Mm!” Huang Ying nodded with a smile. It was obvious how excited she was.
When we arrived at school, everyone was in a somber mood. News of the dorm leader’s death had spread throughout the school. Everyone now believed that a ghost had caused it and was demanding that the school close for a period of time.
Only Chen Yuming and I knew the truth about what had happened in our class. But I was the only one who knew who had done it.
I decided to keep it a secret forever.
During class, the teacher asked about Li Yun several times, but I remained silent. She called Li Yun’s parents, only for someone else to answer. Later, she asked our classmates where Li Yun lived, but not a single person knew.
During class, the teacher received a phone call. After that, she never mentioned Li Yun again.
I spent the entire day holding everything inside. With both the dorm leader and Li Yun gone, the classroom suddenly felt as though half its vitality had disappeared.
The moment school ended, the first thing I did was run to Li Yun’s villa to check on her.

I opened the door to the ice room. Three freezers lay there in silence, making the place seem especially bleak.
But when I approached Li Yun’s freezer, I panicked. It was completely empty. There was no one inside.
I thought she had awakened and ran to her room, but it was empty too.
Then I found a note on her desk.
“Wang Yu, Heaven has played another joke on me. I thought I would die like that, but instead, it let me survive. Since I cannot die, I will live well. I have left this city. Perhaps we will meet again someday. Also, thank you for last night. It was the happiest day I have had in more than ten years. And please take care of my parents. I will come back for them someday.”
Those few dozen words left behind far too many questions.
I remembered the phone call the teacher had received that day. It must have been from Li Yun.
I had no idea what had happened to her. Holding the note, I left the villa and returned home in a daze.
The moment Huang Ying opened the door, I pulled her into my arms before she even had time to speak. I held her tightly, but she did not resist.
I was becoming more and more afraid that the people around me would leave me. First the dorm leader, then Li Yun. Who would be next?
Only after a long while did I let Huang Ying go.
“I’ve made dinner. I’ve been waiting for you for ages.”
I gave a quiet hum, then sat down at the dining table.
While we were eating, Grandfather called me.
Usually, I was the one who called him. He never took the initiative to call me.
I certainly did not believe he had called because he missed me. Something serious must have happened—something urgent enough to set his hair on fire. As far as I knew, my parents had been away for many years, and Grandfather had called them fewer than five times.
I carried my bowl to the sofa, sat down, and answered the phone.
“Is that Wang Yu?” Grandfather’s voice came from the other end.
“Yes, it’s me.” I did not bother with small talk or ask how he was feeling.
“Are you planning to find a way for Huang Ying to reincarnate?” Grandfather asked.
My heart jolted. I had not even considered that.
