Chapter 22: The Fortune Tiger
“No wonder the president is completely under her thumb!”
“I really want to see what our lady actually looks like!”
Yunjin Bay.
“Di Yunshen, you’re too slow. I'm going to bed!”
Di Yunshen had just stepped out of the study when he shook his head helplessly…
Susu Qingli had been looking for him nonstop just moments ago, and now that he was free, she’d gone to bed!
He rubbed his temples and returned to the bedroom as well.
Early the next morning, Di Yunshen thought Susu Qingli would really sleep until noon, but… that dreadful singing started up again from the next room!
“Li’er.”
This time, Di Yunshen had learned his lesson. If calling her once didn’t work, he’d just go over and pull the plug on her power strip.
“Di Yunshen, you’re awake?”
“I should be the one asking you that.”
“…”
“Come on, we’re going to see your master.”
“I did the math—if we go at noon, we’ll run into the Lucky Tiger!”
“I don’t need luck. Let’s go now.”
“But I do!”
Fine, Di Yunshen said no more and let Susu Qingli have her way.
Di Yunshen was just about to look over some documents when Susu Qingli came over again.
“Di Yunshen, Di Yunshen! Hurry up, let’s go! If we don’t leave now, we’ll miss the Lucky Tiger!”
He realized that he simply couldn’t go to the study—whenever he did, this girl always found something for him to do!
He put his things together and the two of them set off by car.
“Di Yunshen, we’re being followed.”
Di Yunshen glanced at the rearview mirror—there was a semi-trailer behind them.
“That’s our people.”
“What’s in the back? If it explodes, wouldn’t we both be finished?”
“…”
“That’s a gift for your master.”
Susu Qingli looked astonished. “That much?! How much did all that cost?”
And that didn’t even count the eighteen wineries Di Yunshen had sent! Back when he wanted to get their marriage license, he’d used all eighteen of them!
The car had covered about half the journey when Di Yunshen suddenly hit the brakes, and Susu Qingli opened her eyes.
“What’s wrong?”
She looked in the direction Di Yunshen indicated and saw a tiger cub lying in the middle of the road!
“President, there’s a tiger cub! Should we go around, or wait here for its mother? It’s so young—if its mother doesn’t come back soon, it may not survive.”
Susu Qingli waved her hand and got out of the car. “No need, bring it over. Its mother is already dead; the body should be in a grass nest southeast from here.”
As she spoke, Susu Qingli walked over and picked up the tiger cub, holding it in her arms.
The little tiger looked to be barely a month old, probably hadn’t eaten in ages—its limbs were weak. The mountain road was so cold, the cub wouldn’t have survived much longer.
If they’d arrived any later, it might not have made it.
Just as they got back in the car, the bodyguard returned. “President, we found it.”
Susu Qingli pulled a yellow talisman from her cloth pouch and, drawing symbols with a cinnabar brush, said, “Rest easy and go on; I’ll protect your child and see it grows up.”
“Bury this together with the body.”
“Yes, madam.”
Di Yunshen’s car drove ahead; the others would follow after they finished.
“Our lady is incredible—a real sage!”
“You haven’t even seen the most amazing part! Not long ago, the head of the Lin family—strong as an ox—our lady predicted he wouldn’t live past the next day. And it was true! He didn’t even make it to his son’s wedding.”
The three bodyguards dug the grave while swapping stories.
The more they heard, the more their backs chilled.
“My cousin is a fortune teller. He told me the most powerful master in the world is the old grandmaster named Qi Ge.”
“I’ve heard of Qi Ge too!”
“Then do you know about Qi Ge’s two disciples?”
The other two shook their heads, looking at him expectantly.
“Qi Ge had only two disciples, one man and one woman. And today, we’re delivering gifts to that very grandmaster.”
“You mean our lady! She’s…”
He nodded. “Our lady isn’t just a sage—she’s a true grandmaster!”
As the other two shivered, the one in the know just laughed.
“Otherwise, did you really think our lady came from some rural village? That’s just the rumor. People don’t realize this entire mountain belongs to her. And from what my cousin says, rumor has it her skills are even greater than her master’s.”
They spent the whole journey discussing these things.
Up ahead, Di Yunshen and Susu Qingli had reached the mountaintop.
“Master!”
“Little junior sister is back.”
“Eh? Senior brother, you’re here too!”
“Mm, just got back yesterday.”
“Di Yunshen, this is my senior brother, Shen Mo.”
There was no need to explain—over the years, when Di Yunshen had secretly visited Susu Qingli, the two men had gotten along splendidly! They’d often drink together, though Susu Qingli had no idea.
Now they had to pretend they were meeting for the first time, shaking hands…
“The gifts are coming in the next car—about twenty minutes out.”
“Good. Master knew you and junior sister were coming, so he started cooking early. Oh, and he got pet milk for your little sister.”
Susu Qingli smiled. “I know! It’s in my room, right? Di Yunshen, you chat with my senior brother. I’ll go to my room for a bit.”
Honestly, this master and disciples were all gifted at divination—they didn’t even need to text each other.
“Yunshen, long time no see. This time you don’t have to sneak around! Shall we have a drink tonight?”
“Gladly!”
“You two brats, come help!”
“Coming, Master!”
“Clumsy as ever—get out of here!”
Shen Mo: “…”
