Wanting to leave some private time for the mother and daughter, Zhao Xin quietly stepped out of the hospital room and gently closed the door behind her.
Standing in the corridor, she dialed Chen Zimo’s number.
“Zimo, it’s Xin. Tongtong has woken up.”
“What? Really? I’m coming right away.” Hearing her voice, Chen Zimo, who had been drowsy, instantly became alert. After hanging up, he changed clothes and headed to the hospital without hesitation.
Stepping out of the taxi, he immediately spotted Zhao Xin waiting at the entrance.
Even dressed plainly, she stood out unmistakably in the crowd.
Such an exceptional young woman, with such gentle temperament.
Thinking about how she had been tirelessly busy these days for her younger sister’s sake, managing everything inside and out, warmth surged in Chen Zimo’s heart.
How fortunate he was to know such a wonderful woman.
Seeing Chen Zimo get out of the car, Zhao Xin quickly approached and handed him a handkerchief. “You must be tired.”
Taking the handkerchief to wipe his forehead, Chen Zimo shook his head. The two of them walked toward the hospital room.
“How is Tongtong?”
“Auntie is with her now. I thought Auntie must be exhausted too, so I wanted to give them some alone time to help ease the emotions from these past days.”
She really didn’t know how Xie Fanghua had endured it all. Watching from the side, she felt a pang of pity.
Chen Zimo felt a warmth in his chest. “You’re so considerate.”
Though simple words, they felt as sweet as honey.
Zhao Xin smiled softly, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear—utterly graceful.
When they entered the room, the atmosphere was heavy and cold, not at all like Zhao Xin had anticipated. Xie Xitong showed no signs of hysteria, and Xie Fanghua was only quietly sobbing, occasionally pleading, “Tongtong, please say something to Mom. Don’t scare me like this!”
“Mom… what’s wrong?”
“Zimo, come quickly and see. No matter how I talk to her, Tongtong won’t say a word.”
Zhao Xin glanced over and saw Xie Xitong’s vacant eyes staring blankly at the ceiling, utterly indifferent to everything around her. Remembering the doctor’s words, Zhao Xin began to understand.
Though she had been asleep, the healing spring’s effect meant she could still perceive what happened outside. She could hear what the doctors said. Perhaps her subconscious didn’t want to wake up. But because the spring’s effect was so strong, she had to emerge from her closed-off world and face the reality of her broken leg. So now she was resisting despondently.
“Tongtong, this is your brother. Look at him. Hasn’t he always been the one who loves you the most?” Xie Fanghua cried out.
Xie Xitong seemed to respond slightly, her eyes stiffly turning toward Chen Zimo, then returning to stare blankly at the ceiling without moving.
Seeing her like this and sensing another burst of sobbing coming, Zhao Xin hurriedly said, “Auntie, don’t worry. I’ll call the doctor over. Maybe the doctor knows what to do.”
“Yes, yes, call the doctor quickly!”
“Okay.” Zhao Xin nodded, glanced at Chen Zimo who was bent over talking to Xie Xitong, then turned to leave the room.
When the doctor arrived, Xie Xitong had already lain down. After a brief examination, the doctor closed the case file and stepped out.
“Doctor, how is my daughter? Why is she like this after waking up?” Xie Fanghua asked anxiously.
The doctor flipped through the file, adjusted his glasses, and said, “All tests are normal. The brain CT scan is clear; the patient is recovering well. This behavior may be a psychological resistance triggered by overhearing conversations while she was unconscious. She might be struggling to accept reality. Now, it’s up to the family’s encouragement. If possible, it’s best to arrange for two well-known psychological counselors. This condition is risky; family members must watch her closely.”
In other words, don’t let her do anything reckless.
Hearing this, Xie Fanghua staggered, but Chen Zimo quickly caught her. He nodded politely to the doctor. “We understand, thank you, doctor.”
After the doctor left, Xie Fanghua broke down, covering her face in tears.
Chen Zimo and Zhao Xin helped her sit on a chair in the family waiting area. Zhao Xin comforted her, “Auntie, please don’t be too upset. Tongtong is still lying there, needing your comfort and care. You have to take good care of yourself.”
“That’s right. Xinxin is right. Mom, you’re our pillar right now. For Tongtong’s sake, you mustn’t collapse,” Chen Zimo added gently.
Wiping away her tears, Xie Fanghua looked at her son, who had visibly lost weight over the past few days, and resolutely said, “You’re right. Tongtong is waiting for me. I can’t give up. I must be strong.”
Chen Zimo put his arm around her shoulders. “Mom, don’t worry. Everything will get better.”
“Yes, Auntie, don’t lose heart. Medical science is so advanced now; there might still be hope for Tongtong,” Zhao Xin encouraged. “You’re Tongtong’s support now—you have to hold up!”
Taking Zhao Xin’s hand, Xie Fanghua patted it gently. “Good child. We owe you so much lately.”
“Auntie, please don’t say that. Zimo and I are good friends. Helping out a bit is only natural.” Zhao Xin glanced at Chen Zimo, her eyes full of affection. Usually, Xie Fanghua would have noticed it clearly, but now her worries about her little daughter left her no mind for other things.
“This isn’t just a small favor. You’ve been running around for us, cooking meals and making soup—I’ve seen it all and I’m grateful,” Xie Fanghua said warmly.
Zhao Xin quickly replied, “Auntie, you’re too kind. It’s what I should do. Xixi and Tongtong have been best friends since childhood. You’ve helped us so much. Besides, Zimo and I are quite close.” She shot Chen Zimo a playful look. “Zimo, shouldn’t you convince Auntie? She’s acting too formal.”
Chen Zimo nodded. “That’s right, Mom. Considering Xixi and Tongtong’s friendship, and Xinxin and I’s relationship, please don’t say that.”
“Oh, Auntie, you haven’t eaten anything since morning. I left the thermos in the room; I’ll go get it for you. This afternoon, I’ll make a pork bone soup to help you regain strength.”
“Zimo, please keep Auntie company and talk to her,” Zhao Xin said before leaving.
Watching her leave, Xie Fanghua patted her son’s hand and murmured, “This girl is truly impeccable. But her family background, and that Liu girl…”
Though Zhao Xin hadn’t shown any affection toward her son in front of her, as someone with far more life experience, Xie Fanghua could see through it.
For someone so devotedly running errands for their family, it was impossible she had no ulterior motives. Moreover, judging by her son’s behavior toward this young lady, Xie Fanghua had an inkling.
The girl was wonderful, but the family background…
