Chapter 88: The Wedding Officially Begins
Shen Xian was playing with Qingqing in the living room when he received a message and couldn’t help but laugh. Still, he replied, “Alright, I’ll send you the audio file in an hour.”
Not long after, Zhou Wan rushed out of the bathroom and said to Shen Xian, “Shen Xian, I have to hurry to the company to record a song. Postman said he’s prepared a new piece for me to sing at the wedding of the wealthiest man’s son in Binjiang. The ceremony is tomorrow.”
Shen Xian smiled, “Go ahead.”
“But what about Qingqing…” Zhou Wan sounded a bit embarrassed.
“Don’t worry, leave Qingqing to me,” Shen Xian replied.
Zhou Wan hurried out the door.
Qingqing happened to be sleepy, so Shen Xian went into the recording studio. After thinking for a while, he quickly wrote a song called “Today You’re Marrying Me.” The song was originally meant as a duet, but Shen Xian thought Zhou Wan could handle it solo, so he finished writing it anyway. From composing to recording a demo, it took only half an hour, and then he sent the audio file to Zhou Wan.
Zhou Wan had just arrived at Yu’an Media when Postman’s song came through. Entering the studio, she began to try it out, but as she sang, she frowned and looked out at Ning Cai, who was listening from outside the booth. “Cai Cai, don’t you think there’s something odd about this song?”
Ning Cai nodded, “It does feel a bit strange, but I can’t quite put my finger on it.”
Zhou Wan said, “This song is better suited as a duet, with each singer taking a verse and then singing the chorus together. If the rap section were written like a priest’s ceremony, wouldn’t it make the song feel fuller and more interesting?”
Ning Cai’s eyes lit up, “Exactly! This song is brilliant! I’ll arrange for a male singer to come record right away.”
Her first thought was Liu Sheng, but he already had a song set, also written by Postman, and appearing twice at the wedding would be a bit much.
So she called over two younger male singers from the company, but both she and Zhou Wan were disappointed. Their vocal timbres and skills weren’t right, and their performances felt awkward.
“There’s no one else,” Ning Cai shook her head. “We did have a few male singers who’d be perfect, but some have terminated their contracts, others jumped ship, all following Wu Fan out the door.”
Zhou Wan frowned, “If it doesn’t work out, I’ll just sing it alone.”
Ning Cai thought for a long time before saying, “Actually, I have a suitable candidate, but it depends if you’re willing to work with him.”
“You’re not going to ask me to find Postman again, are you?” Zhou Wan felt exasperated—she’d already troubled him so many times.
“Yes,” Ning Cai replied, “Postman is a great singer. Besides, haven’t you always wanted to meet him? Why not take this chance?”
Suddenly, Shen Xian’s image flashed through Zhou Wan’s mind, and she was overwhelmed by a strange sense of guilt. She actually felt as if she were betraying Shen Xian. She shook her head vigorously, “No, absolutely not.”
“Wanwan, you’re now the co-owner of Yu’an Media. You know the company’s situation. You don’t want to see my company go under, do you?” Ning Cai pressed.
Defeated, Zhou Wan hesitated.
Ning Cai added, “I’ll take care of Qingqing tomorrow. You can focus on your duet with Postman.”
Zhou Wan sighed, “Alright, I’ll try, but whether he agrees or not is another matter. I can’t promise anything.”
Ning Cai nodded, the corners of her mouth lifting in a subtle smile.
Zhou Wan took out her phone and sent a cautious message to Postman: “Are you there?”
A typical message from someone trying to please.
Postman replied: “Yes.”
Zhou Wan: “Can you duet with me on this song tomorrow?”
When Shen Xian didn’t reply for a while, Zhou Wan quickly sent another message: “It’s not certain you’ll actually have to perform. Our company has prepared another song, and mine is only a backup in case of unexpected circumstances. If it’s not needed, you don’t have to go on stage. I’ll still pay you the appearance fee—five hundred thousand!”
Postman frowned, thinking it over, but soon relaxed. The song he gave Liu Sheng would easily overshadow the whole event—there wouldn’t be any surprises. The chances of him needing to go on stage were slim. He could blend into the crowd, enjoy the banquet, and still collect his fee. Perfect.
He replied, “Alright.”
Zhou Wan was delighted to receive his message. “Do you want to come record the song?”
“No need, just have your company’s musicians record the backing track and string arrangement,” Postman replied.
Zhou Wan then started practicing in the studio. She truly had musical talent—after three runs, she’d memorized the lyrics. Still, to be safe, she practiced dozens of times.
By the time she got home that evening, it was already nine o’clock.
“Qingqing’s had dinner, but I didn’t bathe her. That’s a task for you,” Shen Xian said with a smile.
Zhou Wan nodded. Since Shen Xian didn’t know he was Qingqing’s biological father, his caution was understandable.
She longed to tell him the truth, to say, “Qingqing is your daughter.” But the words stuck in her throat.
First, she felt Shen Xian might not be able to handle the news yet; he and Qingqing hadn’t been together long enough. She couldn’t just blurt it out because he liked Qingqing—that would be emotional blackmail.
Second, Ning Cai would soon take Shen Xian back to the capital for the Mid-Autumn Festival, and their relationship might develop. To tell him now would feel like betraying Ning Cai.
So, she decided not to say anything for now. When the time was right, she’d tell him.
“Ning Cai will come pick up Qingqing tomorrow morning, so you won’t need to worry,” Zhou Wan said with a smile. “Here’s an invitation—Ning Cai asked me to give it to you. If you have time, you could drop by the wedding and enjoy yourself.”
Shen Xian nodded and accepted the invitation. “Alright.”
The day before the Mid-Autumn Festival—lunar August 14, October 2 on the solar calendar—the son of Binzhou’s richest man, Yao Feiyu, would wed the eldest daughter of Victory Precision Group, a leading high-tech enterprise from Haicheng.
The Yao family’s main business was electronics. Victory Precision was one of the nation’s top ten chip companies. Their union was a powerhouse alliance, drawing attention from several provinces.
But what truly stunned the nation, even the world, was that Yao Feiyu was spending 200 million yuan on the wedding.
This made the opportunity to perform at the wedding an extraordinary chance for exposure.
The event itself was anything but ordinary. Besides the concert, there would be a ball, skits, stand-up comedy, and even a trade fair. The Yao family would showcase their latest smartphones, while Victory Precision would display their newest chip technology.
As both companies were high-tech giants, nearly all major figures from the entertainment industry would attend. Also present would be heads of famous domestic music apps, anime, and mobile game companies.
“Today, I’ll make my mark!” Chen Feng clenched his fist.
Liu Ruyun was equally excited. “This duet is so moving, even I get emotional singing it. Yao Feiyu is bound to notice us!”
On this day, lunar August 14, Yao Feiyu’s wedding officially began.
