Chapter 137: Fingers Intertwined

Along the way, Song Wanning kept dozing off due to Jiang Mingzhao's interruptions and the fact that she hadn’t rested well the previous night. It wasn’t until this moment that she suddenly realized: when visiting elders, one should bring gifts—how could she show up empty-handed?!
With this thought, Song Wanning instantly became fully alert. She grabbed Wen Jingxing’s arm and said, “Oh no, I forgot to bring a gift for grandpa. Is it far from here to the city center? Maybe we should go back out and buy something before we proceed?”
Seeing her anxious expression, Wen Jingxing chuckled softly before replying, “I knew you weren’t feeling well, so I prepared everything early this morning. You don’t have to worry about any of that; I’ve got it all arranged.”
“But—”
“There’s no need for any ‘but’. It’s quite far from the city; you wouldn’t have enough time to go back and forth. If you really feel bad about it, we can come again next time and personally pick out a gift for grandpa.”
Song Wanning thought for a moment, then nodded in agreement, “Alright, let’s settle on that plan for now.”
She felt happy, and Wen Jingxing became even more pleased.
Even happier than the two of them was the diligent cameraman who felt almost invisible. Ever since returning to Wen Jingxing’s residence, these two had become more engaging—and the cameraman eagerly anticipated the fan frenzy that would erupt once the footage aired.
Song Wanning glanced at the excited cameraman and said, “Big Brother, the live stream can start now.”
The cameraman snapped out of his trance, tapped his head, and nodded in acknowledgment.
At the moment the live stream began, all the fans who had been waiting flooded in immediately.
“Ah~ waited a whole day and night, Wanning, you finally went live!”
“Wanning’s casual vibe reminds me so much of Li Weiwei—just going live whenever she wants, no prior notice. But I love that confident attitude!”
“Wanning and Nan Yan are like polar opposites in personality—one cool and commanding, the other gentle and sweet. Nan Yan tells us the next live time before ending, but I adore them both!”
“By the way, who do you think Wanning will meet today?”
“Wait, look! Isn’t that familiar silhouette next to her Wen Shao?”
“Huh? Didn’t she say she was meeting someone she knows? Why are those two together?”
“Don’t rush, you’ll see soon enough.”
...
After Wen Jingxing got out of the car, he first opened the door for Song Wanning. Once she stepped out, he went around to the trunk to retrieve some things.

Seeing this, Song Wanning moved to help. She had just touched the fruit basket when Wen Jingxing’s large hand stopped her. “This is heavy. You take this.”
He naturally took the fruit basket and handed her another gift box wrapped in golden velvet.
Song Wanning asked, “What’s inside?”
“It’s an inkstone. Grandpa likes fiddling with these kinds of things, so I bring him one every time I visit.”
She held the box, feeling its weight—it was substantial. Even without opening it, she knew the inkstone must be expensive.
She mentally noted Wen Jingxing’s words.
Then she said, “Let’s go in.”
She began to walk forward but noticed Wen Jingxing still standing where he was. She looked at him, puzzled. “What’s wrong?”
The next second, Wen Jingxing reached out and took her hand.
They had gotten up early that morning, so the cameraman wasn’t nearby. Wen Jingxing could quietly ask Song Wanning to agree to grandpa’s request. But now that the camera was rolling and the live stream was on, he didn’t explain but Song Wanning understood immediately.
She knew that Wen Jingxing holding her hand now was simply to make grandpa happy if he saw them together.
Song Wanning gently squeezed his slender, well-defined fingers with her own.
His fingers were long and thin, with a tanned complexion and veins subtly visible beneath the surface.
Her fingers were also long but felt soft and warm in his palm.
Her skin was naturally fair, and next to Wen Jingxing’s wheat-colored skin, it appeared even paler.
Wen Jingxing was momentarily stunned by her obedient demeanor, almost fooled into thinking she truly was the little fiancée who had come home to meet his elders.
He quickly snapped back to reality.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t the time for that yet.
The viewers on the live stream didn’t notice Wen Jingxing’s fleeting disappointment; instead, they saw how doting his gaze was upon Song Wanning.
“Oh my gosh! They’re holding hands! Fingers intertwined!”
“The best part is, Wanning actually squeezed back!”
“This is definitely mutual affection!”
“Wen Shao’s look at Wanning is so sweet.”

After they clasped hands, the two walked along the path to the gate of the courtyard. Wen Jingxing then reached out and rang the doorbell. The brand-new gate immediately swung open.
A pale white head peeked out.
Song Wanning looked at the elderly man before her—well past his fifties, his hair completely white, and his face lined with wrinkles—but he was dressed in a suit and leather shoes.
Though his figure was somewhat thin, he looked robust. His eyes showed no trace of age-related cloudiness, only clarity.
Upon seeing the two of them, the elderly man excitedly opened the gate wide.
“Jingxing! Finally you’re here. And Wanning, it’s been a while. Your child is growing more and more handsome! That puts my mind at ease. Looks like the Wen family’s eldest daughter-in-law and Jingxing haven’t neglected you on the show.”
As he spoke, he stepped forward, grabbed Song Wanning’s hand, and patted the back of it.
“Who is this old man? He seems very familiar with Wen Shao and Song Wanning!”
“Judging by his tone, is he some elder in the family?”
Only when Wen Jingxing said, “Grandpa, didn’t I tell you to wait inside? You opened the door as soon as I rang—how long have you been standing here?”
did the old man stop telling the truth. Cheerfully, he interrupted, “Come inside quickly. You must be tired from coming so far. Rest a bit first.”
“Wow, this is Wen Grandpa himself!”
“Grandpa! Grandpa! I think you need a well-behaved grandson too!”
“If Wen Shao calls him grandpa, he must be legit.”
“So, they’re meeting the family today!”
“Ah! Meeting the family, and it’s Wen Grandpa—the eldest senior of the Wen family. Wanning’s marriage is definitely settled!”
The old man looked down and saw their hands clasped, his smile grew even wider.
The courtyard was planted with many flowers, plants, and trees, leaving only a narrow path in the middle.
The old man led the way. Wen Jingxing reached out as if to support him but was refused. “I’m still sturdy. No need for your help.”
Song Wanning watched the grandfather and grandson with amusement. The old man was indeed like the stubborn old rascal described in books.
