Chapter Ninety-Three: Untimely
On the morning of the thirteenth day, the weather was still drizzling, and the sky remained heavy and overcast.
It looked as though a torrential downpour was about to break.
After getting up, Song Wanning glanced at the muddy path outside the window, rubbed her slightly chilled hands together, and closed the window tight before leaving the bedroom.
Out on the sofa, Wen Jingxing was still sitting there.
"Wanning, you're up."
"Mm, yes. The weather looks even worse today." She asked casually.
To her surprise, Wen Jingxing suddenly said, "Yes. A typhoon is coming here soon."
"A typhoon?" Song Wanning seemed to remember something about that.
In the story’s plot, the show had actually been halted for a full fourteen days in order to avoid that typhoon.
However, nothing happened during those two weeks, so the novel had only skimmed over it in passing.
"Oh... around when?"
"About a week from now."
Song Wanning did the math; that was indeed about right. "Still, going to the seaside for fun at a time like this might be a little dangerous, don't you think?"
"The news only came out last night. The director will probably tell us today that we're changing locations."
"Okay! Then let's leave first!"
At breakfast, Li Weiwei really did bring up the matter.
But she told everyone not to worry, since it was only a prediction and might not necessarily come true.
Besides, in three more days, they would be leaving anyway.
Only Song Wanning knew that typhoon was a once-in-a-century event, and the consequences were especially severe.
At first, no one had expected it to be that serious, so they planned to wait it out before leaving.
In the end, they were trapped in the resort village for seven days. Fortunately, being in a place like that meant that even if they never stepped outside, they would not go hungry.
At worst, they simply could not go anywhere.
But it was precisely those seven days of intimate, constant contact that made the original Song Wanning’s relationship with Wen Jingxing even worse.
Because Jian An'an used the excuse of keeping her company to go out into the typhoon, unafraid of being blown away by the gale.
She stayed in the original owner’s little villa for seven full days.
During that time, she did not miss a single chance to brainwash her and plant insinuations in plain sight. In the end, the original Song Wanning’s impression of Wen Jingxing only worsened.
After everyone finished eating, it was time for another round of card drawing.
This was also the final draw, and everyone was rather eager to see what identity they would get.
Song Wanning picked up a card, casually turned one over, and when she looked more closely, her eyes widened slightly.
Written on it was "fisherman."
Previously, Jin Jianyi had drawn once with unbelievably "good" luck. Back then, the sun had been shining every day, and after just three days outdoors, he had turned noticeably darker.
She was truly at a loss for words.
The typhoon warning had only just come out last night, and today she was being sent to work by the sea. On top of that, temperatures had dropped recently, so it would surely be freezing out on the water.
Still, this job had one advantage: it generally only required work during the ebb tide.
That is, when the tide went out in the afternoon.
When Wen Jingxing saw that Song Wanning had drawn this card, the first thing he did was question it.
"Director, wouldn't it be a bit inappropriate to go out on the water in this kind of weather?"
The viewers in the livestream who were watching the spectacle immediately echoed him.
"Yes, exactly. I'm a local in Rong City, and I've already heard that a typhoon is coming here. My phone even got a text alert from 10086."
"5555~ Then what is Song Wanning supposed to do now that she's drawn this? Isn't that too unsafe?"
"Maybe tell the production team and have them change it."
"Wouldn't that be bad? The director said from the start that whatever you draw is what you get. You can't change it."
Li Weiwei was just about to say something when Jian An'an suddenly cut in.
"Young Master Wen, you wouldn't be trying to get Song Wanning to change her identity card, would you? That's a rule personally set by the director. Surely you don't really want to be the first person to break it?"
She did not say that doing so was impossible. She only asked whether Wen Jingxing was truly certain he wanted to do this.
Though she had said nothing explicit, it seemed as though she had said everything.
The comments in the livestream became a little uncertain.
"Young Master Wen doing something like this is normal, right? After all, he's only worried about Song Wanning."
"Normal? How is it normal? Knowing the weather is bad and still choosing not to avoid the risk, all for the sake of rules and reputation, and insisting on participating anyway. Does it only count as normal once someone dies?"
"Oh! Your display is quite impressive, isn't it? The typhoon hasn't even formed yet, and you're already cowering here, too afraid to die."
"Exactly. The sea is still calm right now, okay? It's just raining and a little gloomy. Why make such a fuss? You've clearly never seen the world."
Very quickly, the discussion split into two camps.
One side believed personal safety came first.
The other insisted that for now it was only a prediction; not even the eye of the typhoon had formed, so how could it possibly blow?
Under normal circumstances, Li Weiwei would never have bothered with this. Compared to those dangers that did not yet exist, what she cared about more was her program and its rules.
In some respects, Li Weiwei was a very stubborn woman, and one who did not allow for sentiment, but she was also a director and actress who took her work seriously.
Once, in order to capture a certain shot well, she had not hesitated to put her own life on the line. It was precisely what happened that time that had led to her marriage with the eldest young master of the Wen family.
And now, Song Wanning was someone Wen Jingxing cared about, so naturally Li Weiwei would give her extra consideration.
Just as she was about to speak and let Song Wanning make the choice herself, Song Wanning beat her to it.
"No need to trouble the director. Since the rules were set from the beginning, whatever is drawn is final. There is no need to change it."
Anyway, she knew perfectly well that the typhoon would not arrive for another seven days. It was only the first day now, and they were already leaving on the third day. What did she have to fear?
Besides, so what if it was fisherman? Did Jian An'an really think that meant going out to fish at sea?
Even while under the pressure of Wen Jingxing's piercing stare, she still had to voice her doubts about him.
It was only because she had not paid enough attention. When Jin Jianyi had been chatting with her about seaside fun, she had not been listening at all.
She had assumed they would be going out to sea to fish, without people on shore, and did not realize that a fisherman here actually meant going to the beach to dig up the small creatures hidden in the sand.
The show had to keep up with the times, after all.
Nowadays, what more people liked to watch was digging for seafood at low tide, seeing the person being filmed unearth one little creature after another as if digging for treasure. The feeling was beyond strange and delightful.
Li Weiwei looked at Song Wanning in surprise. "Are you really sure you don't want to change it?"
Jian An'an was even more astonished.
Has this woman gone mad? A typhoon was coming!
What she had just said was only to probe Song Wanning’s feelings.
She had already imagined in her mind all the lines Song Wanning would say to ask for a change of identity card, but now the other woman was saying it was fine and that there was no need to change it?
Wen Jingxing stepped forward and seized Song Wanning’s wrist.
"You don't need to listen to some people spouting nonsense. If you really don't like it, you can change it directly. I'll take responsibility for everything."
Seeing that he truly seemed worried, Song Wanning turned her hand over and patted the back of his hand.
"Relax. Since I chose this, there definitely won't be any problems."
Jian An'an, suddenly dragged into it: ???
What did he mean, don't listen to some people spouting nonsense?
Starting tomorrow, the twice-daily updates will resume. Love you all.
The end.
