Chapter 142: To Be Frank

For modern people, bedtime does not depend on when they get into bed, but only on when they finally put down their phones.
Song Wanning had now mastered this essential truth as well.
At that moment, she was happily scrolling through short videos, marveling at how much fun all these little inventions of the modern world were.
But after watching for a while, Song Wanning exited the video app and opened WeChat instead.
Her message list showed that she had not received a single message.
Song Wanning frowned slightly. Why had Nan Yan not replied to her all day?
Though Nan Yan had occasionally taken a long time to respond before, she had always replied after a while.
But now, an entire day had passed.
Even her calls had gone unanswered.
Unwilling to give up, she sent another message before returning to her short videos.
As she scrolled, Song Wanning unexpectedly came across a video about *Let’s Fall in Love*.
Its title was the rather unoriginal “Two Men Fighting over One Woman.”
Perhaps because she herself was a guest on the show, Song Wanning did not swipe past it immediately. Instead, she stayed to watch.
But the more she watched, the more her expression resembled someone who had seen a ghost.
The video contained something completely new: footage from that very day’s livestream. Most importantly, its main subject was Nan Yan.
Still uncertain, Song Wanning widened her eyes and looked more closely. There was a man in the video who, according to the caption, had known Nan Yan since childhood. They were childhood sweethearts, and he was holding a bouquet of flowers while confessing his love to Nan Yan right there in the street.
At that tense moment, with everyone watching and passersby gathered around, all eyes were fixed on Nan Yan, waiting to see whether she would accept or reject him.
Then the livestream suddenly stopped!
For the first time, Song Wanning understood how helpless it felt to be a viewer.
“It’s over!” she blurted out, accidentally startling Wen Jingxing, who was working beside her.
“What’s wrong?”
“Ah… Nothing, nothing. I didn’t scare you, did I?”
Song Wanning rubbed her forehead lightly.
Wen Jingxing shook his head. “What are you watching that has you so worked up?”
Song Wanning was perfectly open about it and showed him the video on her phone.
After watching it, Wen Jingxing’s expression changed subtly. “What do you think she’ll do?”
“Nan Yan? Knowing her personality, there’s no way she’ll agree.”

“Are you so sure? What if you were in that situation, Ning? What would you do?”
Wen Jingxing’s voice was gentle, but his eyes were fixed earnestly on Song Wanning.
On one side was a fiancé she did not love. On the other was a childhood sweetheart she had known all her life and understood well.
Wen Jingxing could roughly tell that Nan Yan did not care much for Yun Ze.
Just as Song Wanning did not care much for him.
Seeing the seriousness in his eyes, Song Wanning straightened and did not answer at once.
She knew that by asking this, Wen Jingxing was really asking how she felt about their engagement.
If she chose the first option, it meant she intended to marry Wen Jingxing. If she chose the second, it meant she would call off the wedding. And saying she would choose neither was clearly not an option.
Wen Jingxing could tell at once that she was trying to brush him off.
What an impossible question to answer.
In truth, she only had to say directly that she would choose neither. But doing so would be tantamount to rejecting Wen Jingxing.
For some reason, she found herself unable to say the words that would reject him.
When Wen Jingxing saw that she remained silent, he said, “If you don’t want to answer, you don’t have to.”
Song Wanning paused. In the end, she decided that honesty was better.
“For me, everything is fine as it is.”
“What do you mean…?”
Wen Jingxing was uncertain. Did she mean that, to her, he was fine as he was?
But the next moment, Song Wanning’s phone suddenly rang. She picked it up and saw that Nan Yan was calling. She immediately stood and said, “Nan Yan’s calling. I’m going outside to answer it. You keep working.”
She stepped over Wen Jingxing’s legs and climbed off the bed. Just as she was about to leave, Wen Jingxing hurried after her and draped his clothes over her shoulders.
“Slow down.”
“I know, I know.”
Song Wanning slipped on her slippers and left the room.
The moment she answered, she called out, “Nan Yan! You finally replied to me!”
Across from the room, the old master was crouching in the bushes, covered in several swollen mosquito bites. When he saw Song Wanning emerge in such thin clothing, he assumed Wen Jingxing had driven her out.
He had nearly stood up to curse that rascal Wen Jingxing for daring to throw Song Wanning outside!
Only when he heard her speaking did he realize that she had merely come out to answer the phone.
As he turned his head, he saw a dark shape beside him and kicked at it in fright.
Only after the figure let out an “Ow!” did the old master relax.
“Shh! Keep your voice down!”
Squinting into the light spilling from the room opposite, the old master finally saw clearly. It was the cameraman assigned to follow Song Wanning.
What was he doing here?

While answering the call, Song Wanning heard a disturbance and glanced toward the bushes, but she could not see anything.
She had no choice but to put aside her suspicions and focus on the voice coming through the phone.
Nan Yan’s voice was very quiet. “Wanning, are you listening?”
“I am. Why didn’t you reply to me all day?”
“Yun Ze saw what happened during the livestream, so he came looking for me right away… I spent ages explaining everything to him…”
Song Wanning interrupted her. “Long enough that you couldn’t even look at your phone for half a day? Come clean. What exactly did Yun Ze do to you?”
“No, it’s nothing like that. My phone simply ran out of battery and shut down. I only noticed just now.”
On the other end, the corners of Nan Yan’s eyes were red, but there was no trace of sorrow in her expression. She pressed her lips together.
“Yun Ze’s about to come out. I just called to let you know I’m safe. That’s all. I’m hanging up now.”
“Wait—”
Before Song Wanning could finish, she heard the sound of a lock turning on the other end. Nan Yan hurriedly said, “All right, I really have to go.”
“Beep… Beep…”
Listening to the dead tone from her phone, Song Wanning felt utterly helpless. Why had she suddenly started worrying about that little white rabbit, Nan Yan?
She put away her phone and returned to the room.
Only after she had gone inside did the old master dare to let the cameraman speak.
“What are you doing here in the middle of the night instead of sleeping?”
“Nothing. I couldn’t sleep, so I came out for a walk.”
The cameraman was staying in the neighboring courtyard, so the old master did not believe him at all.
“All right, all right. The truth is, I just wanted to come and see Miss Song.”
“You stayed up in the middle of the night just to see Wanning? Don’t tell me you like her!”
The cameraman’s expression changed at once.
“Don’t say things like that so carelessly. How could I like Miss Song? I like watching the sweet moments between Miss Song and Mr. Wen!”
“Sweet moments…?” The old master looked baffled. “What does that mean?”
“It means that when you see two people you like together, and they do something intimate, you call it a sweet moment. Of course, ‘like’ here doesn’t mean romantic feelings.”
The old master was somewhat confused by the explanation, but he seemed to understand the general idea.
The cameraman then proceeded to tell him about all the sweet moments between Wen Jingxing and Song Wanning on the show, until the old master was grinning from ear to ear.
