Chapter Forty-Nine: Public Humiliation
Song Waning asked, “Which of your friends have ‘Xing’ in their names?”
“Is there or isn’t there?” Wen Jingxing pressed, refusing to let it go.
Song Waning bowed her head as if deep in thought, resting her chin in her hand, pretending to ponder for a while.
In truth, she was carefully combing through the plot in her mind. After a moment, she shook her head and replied, “No, among the people I know, only your name has ‘Xing’ in it.”
Wen Jingxing raised an eyebrow. Was she lying to him?
Or had she really been drunk last night, spouting nonsense?
Wen Jingxing fell silent, so Song Waning pressed again, “Is something wrong?”
Was this serious? Did it have something to do with what happened while she was drunk?
But Wen Jingxing simply shook his head. “It’s nothing.”
Up front, Cheng Mu, who was driving, shot a sideways glance at Wen Jingxing. Was the boss trying to find out if Miss Song had been calling for him last night?
Miss Song always seemed to dislike the boss before, but after a yacht party, she started calling him so intimately?
These two really know how to hide their cards. No wonder they make a perfect match!
Cheng Mu delivered them to the place where Li Weiwei had arranged for the guests to gather.
There, Jian Anan, her face swollen, saw Wen Jingxing personally open the door for Song Waning. Jealousy gnawed at her heart.
Wen Jingxing had always been aloof with everyone. Why, after a yacht party, was he suddenly so attentive to Song Waning?
What happened between them?
Jian Anan’s longing for her phone grew more desperate—only then could she access the outside world and find out what had happened between Wen Jingxing and Song Waning last night.
The feeling of being left in the dark was driving her insane.
Unable to contain her anxiety, she rushed over to grab Song Waning’s hand.
The moment Song Waning stepped out of the car and saw Jian Anan’s puffy, pig-like face, she got such a fright she dodged away at once.
Jian Anan was publicly avoided by Song Waning. Her forced smile faltered. “Ningning, you…”
She instinctively wore a wounded expression, forgetting how frightful her face looked now.
Given the state of her injuries, she could have easily asked Li Weiwei to withdraw from the show.
But who was Wen Jingxing? Even a popular starlet like Jian Anan wasn’t worthy of frequenting the places he did.
Once off the show, Jian Anan would lose her only chance to get close to Wen Jingxing.
Meanwhile, Li Weiwei had just started the livestream, so all the viewers witnessed the scene unfold.
If Jian Anan knew, she’d probably want to dig a hole and bury herself on the spot.
Since Wen Jingxing was the only one beside her, Song Waning darted behind him, feigning fear. “Don’t come near me, or next time you’ll accuse me of something again.”
Wen Jingxing, tall and imposing, stood like an eagle, shielding the little chick Song Waning behind him.
Song Waning clutched the fabric at his waist, poking half her head out from behind him.
Wen Jingxing didn’t object, letting her hide and act as she pleased.
[Haha, Song Waning’s words are killing me!]
[It really feels like Wen Jingxing dotes on Song Waning!]
[Ah! It’s Waning! Nothing happened to her last night, right? I saw Wen Jingxing almost get there, I hope nothing bad happened.]
[What! I missed just one night’s livestream and something happened?]
…
Jian Anan’s heart burned with jealousy, but she didn’t dare show it. Her tone was soft as she said, “I already told you it wasn’t on purpose. Why bring it up again?”
Jin Jianyi, seeing Jian Anan looking hurt, rushed over and said to Song Waning, “Why bring up such painful things with her again?”
Song Waning was choked by Jin Jianyi’s words—was this what it meant to be bitten by a dog?
Jian Anan looked so hideous, and yet Jin Jianyi was still so concerned for her. If not for wanting Jian Anan to lose everything, Song Waning would have doubted her own kindness and simply wished the two of them happy ever after.
“She never apologized for framing me last time. She makes accusations as she pleases, and yet I’m not allowed to mention it? She wonders why I bring it up again—anyone would be scared after what she did. I’m not some pushover.”
Song Waning was growing exasperated with Jin Jianyi. What on earth did he see in Jian Anan?
Truth be told, Jin Jianyi was genuinely drawn to Jian Anan’s “gentle” nature.
Jian Anan couldn’t lift her head under Song Waning’s retort. Seeing this, Jin Jianyi felt even more protective.
“Miss Song, they say to forgive when you have the upper hand. She didn’t do it on purpose, so just let it go…”
Suddenly, Jian Anan grabbed his arm. “Enough, Jianyi. Don’t say any more. It’s all my fault. I didn’t realize Ningning was so afraid of me—I shouldn’t have approached her without permission…”
The viewers, having watched the whole scene, voiced their opinions:
[I suddenly find it odd—why does Jian Anan always diss Song Waning? I haven’t seen her clash with anyone else.]
[Song Waning has such bad luck, bumping into a green tea type on a variety show.]
[Isn’t it our Anan who’s unlucky? She only clashes with Song Waning—so Song Waning must be the problem!]
[I think so too. Why keep bringing up the past?]
[Are you Shakespeare’s sister, Saint Jenima the Magnanimous?]
[If someone falsely accused me, I’d never forget it—lifelong grudge!]
[You’re so petty!]
[If you’re so generous, why not donate your salary to needy children? There are so many people in need.]
Li Weiwei, seeing the rising heat, waved for most of the cameras to move closer, giving viewers a front-row seat to the drama.
Jin Jianyi, flustered by Jian Anan’s tears, awkwardly half-embraced her in public. “It’s okay, it’s okay.”
Such a public gesture shocked Jian Anan. If she got too close to Jin Jianyi, how could she ever attract Wen Jingxing?
[Whoa, this plot twist is wild!]
[You can tell Jin Jianyi really likes Jian Anan.]
[Why do I feel like Jian Anan’s expression is a bit resistant?]
Sure enough, the next moment, Jian Anan broke free from Jin Jianyi’s embrace. “Jianyi, it’s broad daylight—this isn’t appropriate.”
Her words made Jin Jianyi think she was just shy, not realizing she was actually resisting him.
Wen Jingxing’s brows knit together. Jian Anan always seemed to be picking fights with Song Waning, which was really annoying.
And it was clear Song Waning didn’t like Jian Anan either—her face was still swollen from the last altercation.
Turning to Li Weiwei, he said, “Director, next time you’re casting guests, don’t just fill the numbers. Don’t bring in any old riffraff.”
