Chapter Fifty-One: Let Me Treat You to a Meal
Song Waning ignored Wen Jingxing’s request, pushing his arm aside and telling him to get it himself—it was only a few steps away, after all. In the end, Wen Jingxing couldn’t win against Song Waning and went over, albeit reluctantly.
The viewers in the live stream were all amused by Wen Jingxing’s unexpected side.
“Wen Jingxing: My wife doesn’t pay attention to me anymore, but she cares about another woman!”
“He really has the makings of a resentful housewife.”
“I’m dying of laughter! So this is what domineering CEOs are like when they’re in love?”
“Calm down, people, it’s all just for the show, just a script!”
“I don’t believe it—unless those two get married.”
“With interactions this sweet, I refuse to believe it’s fake!”
…
Jian Anan watched with jealousy in her eyes, but beside her, Jin Jianyi was still looking at her with his usual, adoring gaze, paying little attention to his career. They were all about the same age, yet Wen Jingxing held the reins of the massive Huo Group, while Jin Jianyi? He didn’t even have a job. When asked what he was doing, he’d say he was pursuing his hobbies.
If only Jin Jianyi had a proper job, Jian Anan wouldn’t look down on him so much, at least not deep inside. She glanced again at Song Waning, who was surrounded by others, her fists tightly clenched. Why did everyone like Song Waning so much? They had all disliked her before, but ever since Song Waning started participating in tasks, people’s opinions of her had only improved, and her admirers kept growing in number.
But in Jian Anan’s eyes, Song Waning was nothing but a useless pretty face—what was so great about that! The more she thought about it, the more her eyes flickered with malicious intent. Secretly ruining Song Waning’s looks wasn’t impossible. After all, in this era, appearances were everything. Wasn’t it just her face that everyone liked? How were these people any different from her own disgusting fans, who claimed to love her voice when, in reality, they were after her figure?
Since they were all superficial, she would destroy Song Waning’s face, and then no one would like her anymore!
Jin Jianyi, sitting beside her, suddenly noticed that Jian Anan’s expression was growing more and more sinister. Not quite sure, he rubbed his eyes, and when he looked again, Jian Anan was gazing at him gently. “Jianyi, are your eyes uncomfortable?”
“Ah… it’s nothing, nothing.” Jin Jianyi hesitated for a moment, thinking he must have been mistaken.
After that, Song Waning kept chatting with Nan Yan, as they were headed in the same direction—only Song Waning’s destination was farther. Since walking would take too long, the production team arranged a car for Song Waning. It was called a “transport car,” but in reality, the trunk was packed with the tools and food she’d need for her stall that day.
So, the whole group ended up hitching a ride with Song Waning. It was a van with seven seats. With Song Waning’s group plus Nan Yan’s, there were only three seats left, so in the end, only Yun Ze’s cameraman couldn’t come along.
Nan Yan wasn’t confident in her driving skills and said she wouldn’t drive, and when Yun Ze saw her decline, he claimed he couldn’t drive either. As for Song Waning, who was from ancient times, that was out of the question—if she drove, she’d probably lead everyone into a ditch.
In the end, Wen Jingxing said helplessly, “I’ll drive.”
Nan Yan, full of excitement, was about to jump into the front passenger seat when Yun Ze stopped her cold. “That seat should be reserved for Song Waning. They’re an engaged couple—we shouldn’t separate them, right? Besides, Song Waning just helped you out.”
After a few exchanges, Nan Yan found she had no good reason to argue. In fact, Yun Ze’s words seemed quite reasonable. She couldn’t let her own selfishness take the seat that belonged to Song Waning.
For the first time, the usually disagreeable pair both placed their hands on Song Waning’s shoulders and ushered her into the front seat.
Song Waning was baffled. She had come to watch the drama, but how had she become the main character? And since when were these two so in sync?
“You’re not…?” Song Waning started to ask.
Nan Yan cut her off, “No need to explain, I understand, Waning! Yun Ze and I will sit together.”
Yun Ze raised his brows at the last sentence—this was truly unexpected. “You said it.”
“Fine.” Since the two were acting in concert, Song Waning didn’t insist.
When they arrived at their destination, the two got out of the car.
Song Waning was puzzled. “Yun Ze, isn’t your task location just ahead?”
“Yes, but I want to walk Nan Yan over first, then head to my own spot.”
The atmosphere between Yun Ze and Nan Yan was unusually harmonious, so when Yun Ze made his offer, Nan Yan didn’t object. She just said, “Alright, but let’s walk quickly, or you’ll miss the start of your task.”
“It’s fine,” Yun Ze replied. “I think I should see you safely there.”
Song Waning, force-fed this display of affection, immediately turned to Wen Jingxing. “Let’s go, let’s go! Are you planning to stay here and eat dog food?”
Wen Jingxing smiled, spun the steering wheel, and drove off again, saying, “If you like, I could drive you all the way there as well.”
“What are you saying? Our locations are so far apart—how could you possibly do that?”
“If you really want to, it’s not impossible…”
After all, there was his private helicopter parked nearby; taking her back and forth wouldn’t be an issue.
But Song Waning didn’t pursue the subject. Instead, she asked, “Last time your driver asked you to take the wheel, you said you couldn’t drive. But aren’t you driving just fine now?”
“I only said I wasn’t a very good driver, not that I couldn’t drive.”
Song Waning was momentarily speechless. That did make sense. She turned to look out the window at the scenery. After a while, she noticed something odd.
“Isn’t this the road to the seaside? There’s only one route, and it doesn’t go anywhere else. You’re not really planning to take me there, are you?”
“I told you, it’s not impossible to drive you all the way.”
“But you…”
“Alright, I’m teasing you. My task is actually near yours.”
Song Waning’s eyes widened. “Really?”
What a coincidence! For two consecutive times, she’d ended up in the same area as Wen Jingxing.
“It’s true. I’m not lying this time.”
Song Waning pouted slightly, not entirely satisfied. “You actually tricked me…”
She’d just asked Wen Jingxing where his task location was, and he had only said “nearby.” She thought it was very close, but it turned out he meant near her own task.
“To make it up to you, I’ll buy you dinner after work tonight, alright?”
The mention of food made Song Waning hesitate. Because of the distance, they wouldn’t be coming back for lunch today, and even dinner was optional. The production team would arrange for food to be delivered to the seaside.
The viewers in the live stream were dumbfounded.
“So that’s why Young Master Wen said those things—his real intention is right here!”
“Song Waning, don’t agree! He’s no good! A man like that should be handed over to me—I’ll handle him!”
“I can hear the calculations of your abacus all the way from Shashi.”
