Chapter 141: Let’s Go to Sleep Together

After hearing him out, Wen Jingxing replied, “All right. This place is a long way from home. If we wait until after dinner to leave, it’ll probably be midnight by the time we get back.”
Song Wanning, however, was not entirely convinced. “But we didn’t bring any clothes to change into.”
The old master cheerfully pointed at Dr. Sun. “You there—go next door and bring me two new outfits from that old fellow’s place. Remember, one for a man and one for a woman.”
Dr. Sun, who had just finished delivering the dishes, nodded and left. Before long, he actually returned with two complete outfits.
Song Wanning took the clothes and ran her fingers over them. The fabric was of excellent quality, and the yarn was so soft and smooth that it felt warm to the touch.
She unfolded the clothes for a closer look. The outfit was exceedingly plain: pure white, without a single pattern, consisting only of an ordinary long-sleeved top and trousers.
Wen Jingxing’s outfit was exactly the same as hers, except that it was a full two sizes larger.
She found it rather strange. How did the old man next door happen to have these clothes?
Before Song Wanning could ask, the old master explained, “That old fellow next door is quite an oddball. Not only is every hair on his head white, but he also adores wearing white clothes. His mind has gone a little awry. He’s always believed he’s a woman, and he even taught himself needlework. Whenever he has nothing to do, he knits sweaters, saying he wants to make them for his little grandson.”
“Oh… That’s rather pitiful.”
“Isn’t it? The only person in his family who’s willing to come visit him is his grandson.”
“Jingxing, next time we come, let’s visit the old gentleman next door too. After all, we’ve taken his clothes, and it’s already getting late.”
Wen Jingxing gave it little thought. “All right. Whenever you want to come, just tell me.”
After finishing his explanation, the old master sent the two of them off to cook. He claimed he was hungry, and he sent Wen Jingxing along as well, giving the excuse that Wen Jingxing could lend Song Wanning a hand.
He himself settled into a reclining chair beneath the veranda, deliberately creating a private space for the two of them.
Wen Jingxing was worried that he might catch cold, so he instructed Dr. Sun to help the old master back into the house.
In the kitchen, Song Wanning washed the dust from all the utensils and began planning what to make for dinner.
Knowing that Wen Jingxing was no good at cooking, she only asked him to select and wash the vegetables and peel them.
By the time they finished in the kitchen and came out, it was already half past seven.
The three of them did not eat much, and there were still plenty of dishes left over from the afternoon.
So that evening, Song Wanning made only a sweet-and-sour fish, stir-fried lotus-root slices, and a plate of braised pork with quail eggs.
The old master ate with tremendous enthusiasm.

The grandfather and grandson each had an extra bowl of rice that night. The old master even remarked, “Just look at the dishes you make, and then look at what Wanning makes. Tsk, tsk, tsk…”
Wen Jingxing did not argue. Instead, he said, “Don’t worry, Grandpa. I’ll certainly learn more from Ning.”
Watching the old master brimming with energy, Song Wanning was delighted as well. She had no idea what sort of predicament awaited her that night.
When she went to take a bath, she asked the old master which room she would be sleeping in.
Patting his chest, the old master confidently assured her that everything had been arranged properly.
Thus, Song Wanning did not suspect a thing and went straight to take her bath.
But when she came out and the old master pointed out her room, she only realized the truth after stepping inside.
She was actually going to sleep in the same bed as Wen Jingxing that night!
At that moment, Wen Jingxing had one hand draped with a towel and was wiping his damp, short hair with the other. When he saw Song Wanning sitting on the bed, he froze as well.
The two of them were now seated side by side on the edge of the bed.
Whether the old master had done it deliberately or not, there was nothing in the room besides the bed.
It was even barer than the room they had stayed in at the resort.
Song Wanning looked at Wen Jingxing, and Wen Jingxing looked back at her.
“Tonight…”
“We…”
They spoke at the same time, then both fell silent at once.
A moment later, they simultaneously turned toward the cameraman standing by the door.
Song Wanning walked over with a bright smile. “We’ll be going to bed soon. You should hurry up and finish work too.”
In truth, the cameraman had no desire to leave at all.
But if the guests did not want their privacy filmed, how could he dare continue recording?
He had no choice but to leave work against his will.
Most people could hardly wait to dash off the moment their shift ended. This cameraman, however, had been sent off early and wore nothing but a resentful expression.
Once Song Wanning closed the door and turned around—

Wen Jingxing said, “Let me explain first. I only just found out that there’s only one vacant room left here at Grandpa’s place. Dr. Sun is using the other one. I think you understand what Grandpa is trying to do, so if you don’t want to sleep in the same bed as me, I’ll sleep on the sofa in the living room.”
“Just leave the door unlocked for me tomorrow morning. I’ll come back early. Grandpa might conduct a surprise inspection and knock on the door.”
The old master had plenty of schemes up his sleeve. He would never believe that arranging things this way would make the two of them obediently sleep together. That was why he had to get up early and knock on their door the next morning.
And that was not all. The underfloor heating, which normally stayed on throughout the day, had been switched off completely that night. Only this room remained warm.
Song Wanning glanced at the slightly thin white sweater he was wearing, then at the thick quilt on the bed.
She steeled herself and said, “It’s fine. I’ll stay here, then. You’re wearing so little, and you don’t even have a quilt. What if you catch cold? Grandpa will definitely become suspicious.”
In truth, Song Wanning was worried too, but she placed all the blame on the old master.
Besides, she trusted completely that Wen Jingxing was a gentleman. He had not taken advantage of her even when she had been drunk before, and now she was on her period as well.
Wen Jingxing was still somewhat surprised. “If you really don’t want to, you don’t have to force yourself.”
Song Wanning shook her head. Not wanting him to worry too much, she smiled and said, “What’s there to be afraid of? Technically speaking, aren’t you my fiancé?”
Only after saying it did she realize that the remark might have been rather forward. Her eyes flickered uncertainly as she studied Wen Jingxing’s expression.
He, however, behaved as though nothing unusual had happened and merely asked, “Have you made up your mind?”
Song Wanning was puzzled. What was there to decide?
She simply nodded. “Mm! It’s late. I want to sleep.”
Wen Jingxing’s gaze grew unreadable as he stared at her delicate face. This woman was rather bold. Did she not know that a woman should not casually spend the night alone with a man?
More importantly, did she know that, to the men of the Wen family, once a man and a woman had slept in the same bed, regardless of whether anything had happened, he was obligated to marry her?
At that moment, Song Wanning, entirely unaware of any of this, lifted one corner of the quilt and patted the mattress, inviting Wen Jingxing to get into bed as well.
Neither of them knew that the old master had secretly slipped out behind Dr. Sun and was now sitting beneath the veranda across from their room. He was determined to see whether Wen Jingxing would come back out.
He refused to believe that, in a room without a single piece of furniture, Wen Jingxing could somehow sleep on the floor!
