Chapter 143: Time to Take Off Our Clothes and Go to Sleep!
Inside the room, Wen Jingxing, distracted by Song Wanning’s words, had long since lost the heart to work. He sent a message to the work group stating that today’s tasks were finished and that any reports needing revisions would be discussed in the conference room tomorrow.
The employees were all wearing expressions of disbelief—why was work ending so early today? Because Wen Jingxing had been balancing his participation in a variety show with his professional responsibilities, he had been handling business deep into the night. When he worked late, the employees had to follow suit. Sometimes, they would be sound asleep in the dead of night only to be jolted awake by a notification from their boss regarding revisions, nearly scaring the souls out of their bodies.
While Wen Jingxing did not actually force his staff to work into the early hours, his "infamous" reputation had already spread; any employee who received his feedback dared not go back to sleep.
When Song Wanning returned to the room and saw that Wen Jingxing was no longer looking at his laptop but was staring fixedly at her, she checked herself uncertainly. Was there something wrong with her appearance?
"What’s wrong? You keep staring at me."
Wen Jingxing looked away and changed the subject. "What did Nan Yan say?"
"Oh, she’s fine. She just said her phone ran out of battery and turned off."
"Then let’s go to sleep early."
"Alright."
Song Wanning replied and climbed into bed. She brought the chill of the night in with her, so she felt a bit cold, but once she slipped under the covers, she found the bed incredibly warm. She tucked the quilt up high.
Seeing her like that, Wen Jingxing asked, "Are you not going to turn on the air conditioning tonight?"
Song Wanning knew he was doing it on purpose, so she immediately kicked him from under the covers. Wen Jingxing, despite being kicked, looked delighted. He let out a low, muffled chuckle from his chest. This made Song Wanning feel quite embarrassed; she silently turned her back to him inside the quilt and muttered, "Hmph, I’m not talking to you."
The weather today was nothing like last night. After the rain, the temperature in the capital had started to drop. Song Wanning couldn't see what Wen Jingxing was doing, but she secretly perked up her ears to listen for any movement behind her.
Wen Jingxing didn't speak again, and all she could hear was the constant rustling of fabric. Unable to contain her curiosity, she snuck a glance at him, only to find that he was actually taking off his clothes!
"You... you're just going to sleep, why are you undressing!"
Song Wanning was so startled she stuttered. Was Wen Jingxing’s image as a gentleman all a lie? She wanted to take back her earlier words—was it too late to kick him out of the room now?
Wen Jingxing’s hand paused on the hem of his shirt, and he looked at Song Wanning with a playful glint in his eyes. "What else is one supposed to do when going to sleep if not take off their clothes?"
He suddenly felt that teasing Song Wanning was quite amusing, so he added, "Do you usually sleep in your clothes? Don't you know that sleeping without clothes is better for the body?"
"I... who sleeps without clothes! You’re lying!"
Song Wanning pulled the quilt tighter around herself and sat up, leaning against the wall. Ever since she had transmigrated, she had worn clothes to sleep every night. Moreover, even the people from her previous life always wore long sleeves and pants to bed. Unlike this era, where men and women could wear shorts and t-shirts, the idea that someone in this world would sleep without clothes truly shocked her.
Wen Jingxing looked at her with slight bewilderment. Weren't there people who preferred sleeping naked? Why did she look so surprised, as if she had never heard of such a thing?
"I wouldn't lie to you," Wen Jingxing said. With that, he pulled his wool sweater upward.
Song Wanning scolded him for being a rascal and immediately covered her eyes with the quilt. However, she heard Wen Jingxing’s hearty laughter from across the bed. "Hahaha, why is your reaction so cute?"
Realizing she might have been tricked, Song Wanning pulled the quilt down to see that Wen Jingxing was still wearing a very thin undershirt. "You said you weren't lying to me, but you were!"
As she spoke, she lunged forward to grab his collar. She caught the collar, but Wen Jingxing let himself fall backward, pulling Song Wanning down with him as she held onto his shirt.
To be fair, Wen Jingxing was quite daring. He hadn't fallen toward the headboard, but toward the edge of the bed. He didn't even look back; since the bed wasn't very large, his head ended up hanging off the edge.
Acting on instinct, even while holding his collar with her left hand, Song Wanning reached out with her right to protect the back of his head. This left her with no point of support for her own body, so her full weight pressed down on him.
The cliché scene of them accidentally kissing didn't happen, but Song Wanning felt she wasn't in a much better situation. Her knees were on the bed, her upper body was pressed entirely against him, and their faces were so close that she had to strain her neck backward to create some distance.
Trying to get up in a panic, her hands mistakenly pressed down on his chest to push herself up. His shirt was thin, and as her palms made contact, she could feel the searing heat of his skin and the firm, powerful muscles beneath. Her face turned bright red, from the tips of her ears down to her neck.
She kept muttering, "Sorry, sorry, sorry..."
She didn't dare look at his expression and scrambled back under the covers in one swift motion. If she had looked at the man across from her, she would have seen how wickedly happy he looked. But she didn't have the courage.
Wen Jingxing reached out and patted her bundled-up form. "Don't worry about it, my hand slipped earlier too." Whether it was a genuine slip or not, no one knew.
A muffled voice came from inside the quilt: "It's fine... let's sleep early."
"Alright."
Wen Jingxing answered, got out of bed to turn off the lights, leaving only a small nightlight on the bedside table. When he climbed back in, he felt it was stiflingly hot, like an oven, making it hard to sleep. He undid the top three buttons of his shirt, pulled the quilt only up to his chest, and rested his hands behind his head.
Outside the room, the old man peered through the window glass and saw the lights go out. He couldn't have been happier. "Wonderful, wonderful! My grandson is going to be married soon! The eldest grandson isn't very proactive, so I'll have to count on the third one! Hahahaha, I’ll be a great-grandfather soon!"
The cameraman standing nearby worriedly noted the old man coughing. "Are you satisfied now, sir? Let’s head back to your room before the two inside hear us."
"Yes, yes, you're right. Let's go!"
